The "Muay Thai" tattoo that went viral
In June 2022 French kickboxing champion Jimmy Vienot shared a forearm tattoo meant to read มวยไทย (Muay Thai). The first letter was ค instead of ม, which turned the word into a crude slang term. Hundreds of Thai followers pointed it out within hours (reported by Nation Thailand).
Why Thai is easy to get wrong
- Look-alike letters: ม / ค / ฆ, ด / ต, บ / ป, ผ / ฝ / พ / ฟ differ by a tiny tail or loop.
- Vowels move around: some are written before the consonant even though they are pronounced after it.
- Tone marks are small but change meaning.
- Letter-by-letter generators: in our October 2026 test, the top Google result spelled 6 of 7 common names wrong.
5-step checklist
- Get the spelling from a source that writes names by sound (try our name tool).
- Choose a font where every mark is clearly visible.
- Ask a native Thai speaker to check the final stencil, not just the typed text.
- Avoid sacred symbols, Buddha images and sak yant unless given by a qualified master.
- Show the artist a high-resolution file so no strokes get "cleaned up".
